Worktop cut-out (sink, hob)

The cut-out for a sink or hob is made once the worktop is on the units or just before. There is no undoing it: a hole that is too big means a new worktop. That is why the size comes from the sink or hob manufacturer’s template, not from the appliance itself.

The price is per cut-out. Stone, sintered and quartz worktops need different tools from laminate and wood.

What the cut-out covers

• marking the opening from the manufacturer’s template;
• checking it clears the unit and the wall;
• drilling the corners and cutting with a jigsaw or router;
• sealing the edge with silicone against moisture;
• test-fitting the sink or hob.

Why the edge needs sealing

The chipboard under the laminate soaks up water. An unsealed sink cut-out swells within months and the worktop starts to delaminate. So the edge is sealed with silicone or a special lacquer after cutting.

What to prepare

The sink or hob with its template and instructions. Give the worktop material and the type of cut-out (inset sink, undermount sink or hob) in the request, and add a photo of the worktop on the units.
