Worktop joining

In an L- or U-shaped kitchen the worktop comes in two or three pieces that have to be joined so the seam is straight, watertight and does not trap water. The joint is made with worktop bolts, a joining strip or a routed mason’s mitre, depending on the material and thickness.

The price is per joint. Routing takes longer than a joining strip.

What the joint covers

• cutting the worktop edges to angle and length;
• routing the slots for the worktop bolts;
• filling the seam with silicone or sealing adhesive;
• bolting the pieces together and levelling the surface;
• cleaning off any excess from the seam.

Strip or routed joint

An aluminium strip is quicker and cheaper but visible and collects dirt. A routed joint gives an almost invisible seam but needs a router with a jig and precision. Wood and stone worktops use other techniques.

What to prepare

The worktops in the right lengths, plus the bolts and sealant if you bought them as a set. Give the material, thickness and kitchen layout in the request and add a photo or sketch.
