Italian design, ordinary mechanics
Colombo Design is an Italian maker of door handles and hardware, bought mostly for shape and finish. Inside, though, a lever on a rose works like any other: a square spindle runs through the lock, a spring in the rose pushes the lever back up, and bolts through the door hold the pair together.
A squeak usually means the mechanism has dried out or the rose is rubbing the door. Play comes from a loose grub screw or a worn spindle seat. A sagging lever nearly always means a tired or broken spring, and at that point a new set is simpler than hunting for parts.
When you buy the replacement, check the escutcheon type (standard key, euro cylinder or bathroom turn), the door thickness and the rose diameter. Italian roses are sometimes smaller than the mark the old handle left, and a pale ring on the door shows from across the room.
One more thing. If the latch still moves stiffly with the handle off, the mortice lock is to blame, not the handle. A new lever won’t cure it; the lock is a separate item.

What spoils the result
- Cooking oil or WD-40 in the mechanism. Within a month it gathers dust and squeaks louder.
- Ordering without checking the escutcheon: a keyed model arrives for a door with a cylinder.
- Scouring pads. Matt and brushed finishes scratch straight away.
- Replacing one side only. A few years on, old and new won’t match in tone.
Colombo door handle replacement: getting ready
Photograph the handle on both sides, the door edge with the lock and the mark around the rose. Measure the door thickness. If you’ve already bought the handles, keep the boxes, because the screws and sometimes spacers are inside. And count every door: one visit for several is easier than several visits.
Booking it
Put a description and photos in the app. Tradespeople who do door hardware in Warsaw reply with offers at their own price and date, and you choose, looking at their reviews. Contact details and the address are shared only after you choose; you pay the tradesperson directly and they issue the invoice.
You buy the handles; screws and small fixings are usually part of the job. The tradesperson answers for their own fitting, not for a delaminating door or a lock they never touched.
