Georg Fischer: pipes you see more in plant rooms than in flats
Georg Fischer is a Swiss company best known for plastic piping systems for industry, swimming pools and large buildings. They turn up in flats less often, but they do turn up. Its polypropylene, polyethylene and PVC pipes are joined in different ways, and the joining method decides the whole repair.
The pipe usually has the material and diameter printed on it. Take a photo of that. PVC-U is solvent-welded; polyethylene and polypropylene are fused. Cement for one plastic won’t hold on another, and the fusion kit has to suit the method. A plumber who sees the print in your photo knows straight away what to bring, or that the section is better replaced with a different system and the right adapter.
A lot of leaks on these installations aren’t the pipe’s fault but a joint made long ago and in a hurry. No miracles here: a bad joint is cut out and done again.
Repair or replace? One leaking joint on sound pipe is a repair. If the pipe is brittle, discoloured, or leaking in several places, it makes more sense to replace the whole run up to the nearest valve.

Common missteps
- Solvent welding on a wet or greasy pipe. It looks fine and lets go a few days later.
- Turning the water on too soon. Cement and fusion joints need time before they take pressure, and the manufacturer gives that time.
- A repair clamp over the leak “for now”. It stays for years and gives way at the worst moment.
- Going from plastic to old steel without the right fitting. The thread cracks or rusts at the joint.
Before the visit
- Photograph the print on the pipe, the leak and the valves.
- Check whether you can shut off water to your flat alone.
- Empty any cupboards hiding the pipes.
- If the pipe runs in the wall, mark the damp patch on a photo.
Before any work on the pipes the water goes off and the pressure is released. If water has reached electrical wiring, the power goes off at the fuse board first.
Booking a plumber
- Describe in the app where it leaks and which pipes you can see, and attach photos showing the print.
- Plumbers who take this work in Warsaw send bids at their own price.
- Choose one on price, ratings and reviews. Phone number and address are shared after you choose; you pay him directly and he issues the invoice.
Pipes, fittings and cement are charged as materials, and so is taking away rubble if walls get opened. Whoever made the joints answers for them and will redo any that leak. The rest of the old pipework and other people’s repairs are not on him.
