What Loctite is good for, and what it isn’t
Most people know Loctite for glue, but in plumbing two product groups matter. One is thread sealing cord, wound on instead of hemp or PTFE tape. The other is liquid anaerobic sealant: it only cures once the thread is screwed tight and air can’t get in, and it fills the whole gap between the turns.
There are also epoxy putties and pipe repair kits. They can stop a leak on a small crack or pinhole, but they’re a patch. A pipe that has rusted along its length, or split lengthwise, needs a section replaced, and no sealant changes that.
Material matters too. Some liquid sealants are made for metal and simply won’t work on a plastic thread. A good plumber reads what the product is rated for before unscrewing anything.

Where these repairs usually fail
- The thread wasn’t cleaned of old hemp and paint. The sealant has nothing to grip, and a few days later the water finds its way out.
- The water went back on too soon. Every sealant has a curing time, and rushing it brings back the same drip in the same spot.
- Patching what should be replaced. Epoxy on a rusty pipe holds until the first pressure spike.
- Overtightening. A cracked nut or a stripped thread turns a small fix into a new fitting.
- Looking for the leak only where it’s wet. Water runs along a pipe and can drip a metre away from the actual joint.
Before anyone comes round
- Find the shut-off valve for your flat and check that it actually closes.
- Take photos of the leak, close up and from a distance, including any damp patch.
- Empty the cupboard under the sink or clear access to the inspection hatch.
- If water is running down a wall with sockets, switch off that circuit.
