A Grothe chime, wired or wireless
A wired chime usually goes where the old bell was. It runs off a bell transformer, most often in the fuse box, with a thin wire to the button by the door. If the old bell already had that wiring, the job is swapping the unit and checking the transformer’s voltage suits the new chime. If it doesn’t, the transformer gets replaced too.
A wireless set helps where there was never a cable, or where the button needs to sit at the gate. The button runs on a battery, and the chime plugs into a socket or takes batteries as well. In a bigger house you might add a second receiver upstairs, if the particular set allows it.
Pick the spot by ear, not by looks. A chime tucked inside a hallway wardrobe will barely reach the kitchen. Some sets also flash a light, which helps anyone hard of hearing and homes where a small child is asleep.

What goes wrong most often
- A new chime on the old transformer with no voltage check. The sound is faint, distorted or missing.
- A wireless button at the gate too far from the chime. Sometimes it rings, sometimes not, and nobody knows why.
- The chime hung above the bathroom door where steam rises. Electronics don’t like damp.
- Old wires left in the wall with bare ends.
- A wireless button screwed straight onto a metal gate without a range test. Metal can smother the signal, and you find out with the first courier.
Before the tradesperson arrives
- Photograph the old bell, the button and the fuse box, if you know where the transformer is.
- Decide where the button goes: by the door or at the gate.
- Choose a chime spot you’ll hear from where you spend most of your time.
- If you’ve already bought the Grothe set, keep the box and manual handy.
Booking
Describe the job in the app and add photos: the old bell, the door, the gate. Bids come from tradespeople who take this work in Warsaw, each with a price and date, and you see their ratings and reviews next to them.
Once you choose, he gets your phone number and address; until then you message in the chat. You pay him directly, and he issues the invoice. Plugs and screws are usually part of the labour; the chime, transformer and batteries are bought separately. Whoever did the fitting answers for it and redoes it himself if needed. Old wires in the wall and someone else’s earlier alterations are not on him.
Swapping a transformer in the fuse box means working on 230 V. Pick someone whose electrical qualifications are confirmed in his profile.
