Three places heat escapes
The first is the gasket between sash and frame. Over the years it hardens and cracks, and the draught comes from under the sash. Replacing it helps, often together with a hardware adjustment. The second is the fitting gap between frame and wall, filled with foam. If the foam has crumbled or was never covered, air comes in from behind the frame. The third is where the reveal and the sill meet the window, and the joint there cracks.
You can test it yourself: wet your hand and run it slowly along the sash, then along the frame and sill. Wherever it feels cold is where the problem is.

Where Soudal comes in
Soudal is a Belgian maker of building chemicals: expanding foams, silicones, acrylics and tapes. Each has its place in a window job. Foam fills the gap at the wall, but it can’t take sun or damp, so on the outside it has to be covered. Acrylic suits joints on the room side because you can paint over it. Silicone and flexible sealants go where there’s water or movement. A good tradesperson picks the product for the spot, not the other way round.
Mistakes that show after one winter
- Silicone over old, crumbling foam. The gap still leaks air; it’s just sealed over now.
- Foam left bare on the facade. Within a season it yellows, crumbles and soaks up water.
- Self-adhesive draught strip instead of a proper gasket. It lasts until you next wash the windows.
- Acrylic in a spot that gets wet, like next to the outside sill.
What to prepare
- A list of the draughty windows and where the draught is on each.
- Close-up photos of the frame, sill and reveals.
- A clear sill and access to the window from inside.
Booking it
In the app, describe which windows are draughty and where, and add the photos. Tradespeople send offers with their own price; it helps when the message also says what they’d seal and with what. Pick one by rating and reviews, and phone and address are shared once you’ve chosen.
You pay the tradesperson directly and they issue the invoice. Materials such as foam, sealant and gaskets are charged separately from the labour.
Order in the app
Describe the job, add photos and the address. Tradespeople send their own prices and dates, and you pick one of the offers.
Open the appThe tradesperson answers for their own sealing and will redo it if a joint opens up. A badly fitted window, a damp wall or cracked plaster aren’t on them.
