Wavin: what the pipes are and where they go
Wavin makes plastic piping systems, and in a flat you meet them in two roles. For water there’s polypropylene pipe joined by heat welding, or multilayer and PEX pipe on fittings. For drainage there’s PVC or PP pipe with push-fit sockets and rubber seals.
Each system joins differently and needs its own tool. Polypropylene is welded at a set temperature for a set time. Overheat it and the bore narrows; underheat it and the joint lets go a few months later. Multilayer pipe needs its end calibrated and the right press or crimp.
With drainage it’s all about the fall. A waste pipe laid almost flat blocks up regularly, even when every joint is sealed.
Brown water usually means rust from steel pipes. Replace only the bit by the tap and the rest will keep shedding it. It makes more sense to renew everything from the flat’s valve to each outlet, even if it’s done in stages.

Where it usually goes wrong
- Polypropylene on the hot supply with no room to expand. The pipe moves every time the hot tap opens and eventually cracks at an elbow.
- Too little fall on the waste. Water sits in the pipe, sludge builds up, and unblocking becomes routine.
- New plastic pushed into an old cast-iron socket without a proper adapter seal. It leaks or smells.
- Fittings from different systems mixed together. They look like they fit but don’t hold pressure.
Old pipes in the wall hide one more trap: some of them belong to the shared riser, and replacing those is agreed with the building management.
What to do beforehand
- Check that the valve isolating your flat works.
- Photograph the pipes, the riser and where it leaks.
- Empty the cupboards under the sink and basin, and pull the washing machine out.
Before work starts the water goes off and the system is depressurised. Nobody cuts a pipe that still has water under pressure in it.
Ordering the job
Describe in the app which pipes need replacing, supply or waste, and add photos. Plumbers who take this work in Warsaw send bids with a price and date. You pick one on price, ratings and reviews, and only then do you swap phone number and address. You pay the plumber directly and he issues the invoice.
Pipes, fittings and brackets are charged as materials on top of the labour, and so is removing old pipe and rubble. Whoever made the joints answers for them and will redo any that leak. The old riser and hidden faults in the building are not on him.
