Basement cleaning: what the job involves
A cellar or storage room is where things put aside “for later” pile up for years. Boxes soak up damp, space runs out and nothing can be found. Basement cleaning means sorting, carrying out what is no longer needed and washing the room so it can be used again.
The service is charged by the hour. The time depends on how much there is, the size of the room and whether things are to be sorted or taken away.
What the cleaning covers
- carrying out the items you mark for disposal;
- sorting what stays and putting it on shelves;
- sweeping, vacuuming and washing the floor;
- removing cobwebs and wiping the shelves;
- taking bulky waste away, if agreed.
Damp and mould in the cellar
If the cellar smells musty and there is mould on the walls, cleaning alone is not enough. The tradesperson can point to the source of the damp, and anything sensitive to moisture is better moved from cardboard into sealed boxes.
What to prepare
Take a photo of the cellar and write in the request what stays and what goes. In a block of flats, check where bulky waste may be left and when it is collected.
Common questions
Will the tradesperson take old furniture and junk away?
They can, if it is agreed. Removal and disposal is usually a separate item in the request.
Do I need to be there?
Ideally at the start, to show what stays. After that you can hand the key to someone on site.
Does cleaning include treating the walls for mould?
A surface wipe, yes. Removing mould from walls and repainting are separate services.
