Water heater installation: what the job involves
An electric water heater provides hot water where there is no central supply: in a house, in commercial premises, in a kitchen far from the riser, or in a flat where the gas water heater was taken out. Fitting one combines three things: hanging a heavy tank securely, plumbing with a safety valve, and the electrical supply.
What water heater installation covers
- checking the wall and choosing fixings: a full 80-litre tank weighs over a hundred kilograms;
- hanging the heater level on hooks or a mounting rail;
- connecting the cold feed through the safety valve and the hot outlet to the pipework;
- running a drain from the safety valve to the waste;
- filling the tank, bleeding the air, connecting the power and a first heat-up with a leak check.
Safety
The safety valve is mandatory. It protects the tank from bursting as the water heats and expands, which is why it sometimes drips: that is normal, and the drip goes to the waste. The heater needs an earthed socket or circuit, and in a bathroom RCD protection too. The electrical connection is made by a qualified handyman with the power off.
Wall and position
A water heater hangs on a load-bearing or masonry wall. A plasterboard wall needs reinforcement or a floor stand. Leave access to the element flange underneath, because the magnesium anode is replaced during servicing.
Common questions
What size should I choose?
One person usually manages with about 50 litres, a family with a bath with 80 to 100 litres. For a single basin, a small under-sink instant or storage unit is enough.
Does a water heater need servicing?
Yes. Every so often the magnesium anode is checked and replaced and the element descaled. That extends the life of the tank.
Will the handyman remove the old heater?
Yes, on a replacement taking out the old one is part of the work. That service is called water heater replacement and has its own line in the price list.
