Gas cooker connection

Connecting a gas cooker is one of the few jobs in a flat where “near enough” will not do. Work on a gas installation may only be done by someone with the appropriate gas qualifications, and every connection has to be leak-tested afterwards. Mark in the app that the job involves gas, so you hear from tradespeople who hold those qualifications.

What the connection covers

• turning off the gas valve and disconnecting the old cooker, for a replacement;
• connecting the new cooker to the gas pipe with a certified flexible hose of the right length;
• leak-testing every joint;
• lighting the burners and oven and checking the flame;
• for cookers with electric ignition or an electric oven, plugging them into a socket as well.

Mains gas or bottled gas

Cookers leave the factory set up for natural gas. On bottled LPG, the burner jets have to be changed for LPG ones, otherwise the flame is too big, sooty and damages pans. The jets often come in the box with the cooker. Say in the job which gas supplies the flat or house.

Safety

Never use an old rubber hose or one that is too short and stretched tight. There must be access to the valve behind the cooker so the gas can be turned off quickly. If you ever smell gas, do not switch on lights or appliances, turn off the valve, open the windows, leave and call the gas emergency service on 992. That is not a job for a tradesperson from the app.
