Garage cleaning

A garage fills up quietly: tyres, old paint tins, boxes left from the move, a bike nobody rides. At some point the car stops fitting, and oil and grit build up on the floor. Cleaning a garage is a few hours of work, and it is easier to book than to keep putting off from one weekend to the next.

What garage cleaning involves

• carrying everything out and sorting it with you into keep, throw away and give away;
• sweeping and washing the floor, treating oil stains with a concrete cleaner;
• wiping down shelves, racks, ledges and corners, and clearing cobwebs from the ceiling;
• putting back what stays so the car drives in without any juggling.

The job is charged by the hour, so you decide the scope. If you only want the floor washed before winter, it is quick. A full clear-out after years of storage usually takes a whole day.

What about taking things away

Removing bulky items, old tyres and leftover paint is charged separately. Tyres and chemicals go to a recycling point (PSZOK in Poland), not into an ordinary skip. If you want the handyman to deal with it, say so in the job and add a photo, so transport is included in the offer.

How to prepare

• decide in advance what definitely stays and put it in one place;
• make sure there is water and power if the floor is going to be washed;
• drive the car out before the handyman arrives;
• in a shared underground car park, let the building management know.
