Door trimming: what the job involves
After new laminate, carpet or tiles go down, doors often start dragging on the floor. The new floor raises the level by a few millimetres, and a door that used to swing freely now catches. Door trimming shortens the leaf from the bottom, without replacing the door or touching the frame.
The price is per door leaf. The time depends on the door material and whether there is a veneer or a strip along the bottom.
What trimming covers
- measuring the gap needed under the door;
- taking the door off its hinges;
- marking the cut line and taping the veneer;
- cutting the leaf with a saw on a guide rail;
- sanding the edge, rehanging and checking the swing.
How big a gap under the door
Around a centimetre is usual, and more in bathrooms and kitchens if the door has no vent grilles. Too small a gap restricts ventilation; too big looks bad and lets noise through. The tradesperson will set it for the room.
What to prepare
Give the number of doors and the type of new floor in the request, and add a photo of the bottom of the door. Clear a space where the door can be laid down and cut, as cutting makes some dust.
Common questions
Will trimming damage the veneer?
Cutting along tape with a sharp blade leaves a clean edge. For paper-foil doors the tradesperson may suggest sealing the edge.
Can a door be trimmed without taking it off?
It is not worth it. Cutting a hanging door gives a crooked edge.
What if the door has glass near the bottom?
Then only a little can be cut. The tradesperson will judge from a photo whether trimming is possible.
