Door adjustment

A door that rubs on the frame, will not close properly or needs a push for the lock to catch can almost always be fixed by adjusting it. The leaf sags on its hinges over time, and wood moves as humidity changes. Door adjustment restores an even gap and easy closing without replacing the door.

The price is per job. It depends on the hinge type and whether the strike plate also needs moving.

What adjustment covers

• checking where the door rubs and how the gap runs;
• adjusting the hinges vertically, horizontally and for pressure;
• moving the strike plate if the latch misses;
• tightening loose hinges and the handle;
• checking that the door closes and the lock works.

When adjustment is not enough

If the leaf has warped, the frame is loose or the door drags on a new floor, adjustment alone will not do it. The tradesperson will then suggest trimming the door, securing the frame or replacing the hinges.

What to prepare

Say in the request how many doors need adjusting and what is wrong: rubbing, hard to close, sagging. Add a photo of the hinges, as their type decides the tools. This applies to interior and front doors alike.
