Lock replacement

Locks get replaced after lost keys, after moving in, or when the cylinder sticks and the key only turns with force. On most front doors you do not need a whole new lock: a new euro cylinder does the job. The full lock is replaced when the mechanism inside the door breaks or you want a higher security grade.

Cylinder or the whole lock

• cylinder replacement: the most common and quickest job, with the cylinder matched to the length on both sides of the door;
• mortice lock replacement: when the latch or bolts no longer throw and the mechanism is damaged;
• rim or additional lock replacement: on older doors and as a second lock.

For a replacement the handyman measures the cylinder from the centre of the fixing screw to each end. Too long and it sticks out of the escutcheon and is easier to snap; too short and it sits recessed, so the key goes in at an angle.

Cylinder grades and security

Cylinders come in resistance grades, from basic models to ones protected against drilling and snapping. For a front door in a block of flats it is worth choosing a higher grade and an escutcheon that shields the cylinder. If the door is a security door, the new cylinder should be at least the grade the door maker specifies, otherwise the door loses its rating.

If you are locked out

Opening a locked door is a different service from replacing a lock. The handyman may ask for a document showing you live at the address. In the job, mention that the door is locked and add a photo of the lock from outside.
