Light switch replacement: what the job involves
Replacing a switch is a good moment to refresh how the walls look, or to swap a basic switch for a double, dimmer or two-way one if the wiring allows. Old mechanisms often have worn contacts, yellowed plates or sit loose in the box.
The price is per switch. The new fittings are supplied by the client.
What the replacement covers
- switching off the circuit and testing it is dead;
- removing the old switch and plate;
- checking the wires and back box;
- connecting the new mechanism and fitting the plate;
- checking it works.
Replacing a whole range
When replacing all the switches and sockets in a flat, it is worth choosing one range. Multi-gang plates let you combine a switch and a socket in one spot. Put every point in a single request.
What to prepare
The new switches and plates. Give their number and type in the request and add a photo of the current ones. If you want a dimmer, check that the bulbs are dimmable.
Common questions
Can I switch to a touch or smart switch?
Often yes, but some models need a neutral wire in the box. The tradesperson can check from a photo.
Does replacement involve chasing?
Not if the back box is sound. A cracked box can be replaced without much chasing.
How long does one switch take?
Usually around a quarter of an hour. Two-way and smart switches take longer.
