Wall chasing for cables

Chasing the wall is the first step for a new socket, a moved switch or a cable run to a light. The cable or conduit sits in the chase, which is then filled with plaster so the wall is ready for skimming and painting. The chase is cut with a wall chaser connected to a vacuum, which keeps the dust down.

The price is per running metre of chase. The wall material matters: concrete is harder than brick or aerated block.

What chasing covers

• marking the route vertically or horizontally;
• checking with a detector for cables and pipes in the wall;
• cutting the chase with a wall chaser and dust extraction;
• cutting recesses for back boxes;
• filling the chase with plaster once the cable is in, if agreed.

Safety and rules

Chases run strictly vertically and horizontally, so it is clear later where cables are and where not to drill. In load-bearing walls and ceilings the chase depth is limited. Circuits near the route are switched off before work starts.

What to prepare

Describe in the request where the cable should run from and to, and add a photo of the wall. Move dust-sensitive items out of the room or cover them with sheeting. If you know what the wall is made of, say so.
