Light fixture replacement

Swapping an old light for a new one is one of the most common small electrical jobs: the old fitting comes down and the new one goes up in the same place. The difference from a new installation is removing the old light, which can be heavy, stuck on its plugs or wired without an earth.

The price is per fitting. The old light stays with the client unless agreed otherwise in the request.

What the replacement covers

• switching off the circuit and testing it is dead;
• removing the old fitting and its bracket;
• checking the wires at the outlet;
• fixing the new bracket and connecting the new light;
• fitting the shades and testing.

Marks left by the old light

A new fitting often has a smaller base than the old one and reveals marks on the ceiling: an unpainted circle or old plug holes. Check the base size beforehand or plan a little painting around the outlet.

What to prepare

The new light with bulbs. Give the number of lights to replace and the ceiling type, and add a photo of the old fitting. For high ceilings and stairwells, note the height.
