A Koło cistern: what gets repaired and what gets replaced
Koło is a Polish sanitary ceramics brand that has been in bathrooms for a very long time. That’s why Warsaw flats have Koło close-coupled toilets of every age, from nearly new to ones you can no longer buy original parts for.
There are two mechanisms in the cistern. The fill valve with its float keeps the water level, and the flush valve with the button lets the water out. In a visible cistern both are easy to get at: lift the lid and it’s all there.
If water spills over into the overflow pipe, lowering the float is often enough. If the valve hisses and takes ages to fill, it’s usually scaled up and simpler to replace. For older models the fitter picks a universal mechanism of the right height and hole size, and the ceramic stays where it is.
A new toilet is a different job: removing the old one, checking the outlet, fixing the pan to the floor, mounting the cistern on it and connecting the water.
A weak flush usually has a simple cause. Either there’s too little water in the cistern because the float was set too low, or the button doesn’t lift the valve all the way. Both take minutes to adjust, with nothing to buy.

What not to do
- Buying a mechanism by eye. Too tall and the lid won’t close; too short and the cistern won’t fill properly.
- Leaving the old angle valve in place when the mechanism is replaced. After years, it often no longer shuts off.
- Putting the ceramic lid down anywhere on the tiles. It breaks more easily than the pan, and a replacement is hard to find.
- Forcing the cistern bolts. The china cracks at the hole and the whole toilet has to go.
Before the visit
- Lift the lid and photograph the mechanisms inside and the button.
- Describe the symptoms: hissing, trickling, weak flush, water at the base.
- Check that the angle valve shuts the water off completely.
The water goes off before any work on the cistern, and if the angle valve won’t hold, the main valve is closed.
How to order it
In the app, describe what’s happening and add photos of the inside of the cistern. From those, tradespeople who take this kind of repair in Warsaw price the work and send bids. You choose one on price, ratings and reviews, and only then do you swap phone number and address.
You pay the tradesperson directly and he issues the invoice. A new mechanism, hose or valve is charged as parts, separate from the labour; swapping the whole toilet adds taking the old one away and carrying the new one up. Whoever did the repair answers for it and will redo it if it leaks again. A burst old pipe inside the wall is not on him.
Order in the app
