Ceiling levelling: what the job involves
An uneven ceiling shows most in the evening under a lamp shining from the side, and along coving that gaps in the middle of the room. Ceiling levelling means taking out dips and waves with levelling compound or gypsum plaster so the ceiling is ready for skimming and paint.
The price is per square metre. Skimming and painting afterwards are further items.
How levelling works
- measuring the unevenness with a straightedge and laser level;
- removing flaking paint and loose plaster;
- priming the base;
- applying levelling compound or gypsum plaster in layers;
- ruling it flat and preparing for skim.
Compound or a suspended ceiling
Differences up to about a centimetre are levelled with compound. At several centimetres or more, wet methods get heavy and slow to dry, and a suspended plasterboard ceiling often works out faster and cheaper. After measuring, the tradesperson will say which makes sense.
What to prepare
An empty room with the light fittings down and the wires insulated. Give the ceiling area and room height in the request, with photos in side light. Ceiling work means a lot of dust and dripping compound, so the floors get covered.
Common questions
How long does it take?
Usually several days, with drying breaks between layers.
Does a plasterboard ceiling need levelling?
Usually just filling the joints and a finishing skim.
What about cracks in the ceiling?
Cracks along the slab joints get mesh before levelling so they do not come back.
