Door handle replacement: what the job involves
A handle that is loose, droops or no longer springs back level is a common problem on interior and front doors. Sometimes tightening is enough; sometimes a new handle and backplate are needed. Replacing a door handle is quick, but the new one has to match the hole spacing and the door thickness.
The price is per job. The new handle is a material supplied by the client.
What the replacement covers
- removing the old handle and plates;
- checking the lock and the return spring;
- fitting the spindle to the door thickness;
- mounting the new handle on a rose or backplate;
- checking the handle and latch work smoothly.
Rose or backplate
A handle on a rose suits many locks, but needs a separate escutcheon for the cylinder or key. A backplate covers a larger area and hides marks left by the old handle. For a front door, choose hardware that protects the cylinder.
What to prepare
Buy a handle that fits the door: check the hole spacing, the lock type (key, cylinder or bathroom) and the door thickness. Photograph the current handle from both sides and say how many need replacing.
Common questions
Does a drooping handle need replacing?
Not always. Tightening it or replacing the spring often does the job, and the tradesperson will check on site.
Will any handle fit any door?
No. Hole spacing and lock type matter. If unsure, send a photo before buying.
Can all the handles be replaced at once?
Yes, and it usually works out better than separate visits.
