Door removal

Door removal is booked before a renovation, when replacing doors with new ones, or when an opening is to be left without a door. Lifting the leaf off its hinges takes a moment, but taking out a frame set in foam, on anchors or in a steel frame needs more care so the wall around it is not damaged.

What door removal covers

• lifting the leaf off the hinges and removing the handle and lock if they are being kept;
• taking off the architraves and lining strips;
• cutting through the foam and anchors and removing the frame whole or in pieces;
• clearing foam residue from the opening and preparing it for the new door.

Steel frames in blocks of flats

In Polish prefab blocks, interior doors often sit in a steel frame built into the wall. It can stay, with a new overlay frame fitted over it, or be cut out with an angle grinder. Cutting it out means dust and broken plaster around the opening that has to be made good afterwards. It is worth deciding before removal, when you choose the new doors.

What happens to the old doors

Doors and frames count as bulky waste. If they need carrying out and taking away, add that to the job as a separate service. Doors in good condition, removed carefully, can be passed on, so say during removal whether they should come out in one piece.
