Safety warning: gas is not like electricity. Even a minor leak can cause poisoning or an explosion. Do not try to connect a gas hob yourself unless you have the right qualifications and tools. Call a certified gas fitter: this is about your safety and the safety of your neighbours.

How the gas hob connection works

- You send photos of the kitchen, countertop, and gas outlet, the technician checks what needs to be done.
- Timing depends on the tradesperson you choose: they give the arrival time in their offer.
- At the flat, the technician inspects the gas valve and pipe condition, and measures the countertop cutout.
- If the cutout has not been made yet — it is cut to the manufacturer’s template.
- The hob is placed into the countertop and fixed from underneath with brackets.
- The flexible gas hose is connected, the joints are tightened, and soapy water is used to test for leaks.
- All burners are checked, the technician confirms there are no leaks, and tidies up.
Common mistakes when connecting a gas hob

- Using an ordinary rubber hose instead of a certified flexible gas connector, the rubber dries out and begins to leak.
- Skipping the leak test after connection, a gas leak may not be obvious straight away.
- Cutting the countertop opening without a template, the hob drops through or does not sit level.
- No shut-off valve before the hob — if there is a leak, you cannot quickly shut off the gas.
- Connecting to an old pipe without checking it first: there may be rust or scale inside.
- Sealing threaded gas joints with regular PTFE tape instead of yellow gas-rated tape, it does not seal the joint properly.
- Trying a DIY connection without certification — if something happens, insurance will not pay for the damage.
What to prepare before the technician arrives

- Check that the kitchen gas valve works and shuts off fully.
- Clear access to the countertop and gas pipe: remove dishes, appliances, and drawers.
- See whether the hob kit includes mounting brackets and a countertop seal.
- Have the hob manual ready: it gives the cutout dimensions and connection type.
- If the countertop already has a cutout — measure it and compare it with the hob dimensions.
- Confirm which type of gas your building uses (natural gas is standard in Warsaw).
- Make sure the kitchen is ventilated: open a window during gas work.
- Prepare a power socket nearby: electric ignition needs a power supply.
- Take a photo of the gas outlet and send it to the technician beforehand.
- Send access details: intercom code, floor, parking.
A real case from Warsaw

A client in the Zoliborz district booked a new Bosch gas hob connection during a kitchen renovation. The countertop was laminated chipboard and there was no cutout yet. The technician marked the opening from the manufacturer’s template, cut it with a jigsaw, and sealed the edges with silicone so moisture would not get in. The old connector was a rigid copper pipe — they changed it to a certified flexible hose with yellow marking. The gas valve was behind a cabinet: there was no need to move it, as the hose was long enough. After the connection, they tested all four burners and applied soapy water to each joint: no bubbles, no leaks. The whole job took around an hour and a half. The lesson here: even if the old connector seems fine, it is better to install a new one when replacing the hob — saving money on a hose is not worth the risk.
Frequently asked questions
Is it mandatory to call a gas fitter for hob connection?
Yes, in Poland gas appliance connections must be done by a specialist with uprawnienia gazowe. A DIY connection breaks the rules and creates a safety risk.
Should the gas hose be replaced when changing the hob?
Yes, it is recommended. The old hose may be worn or may not match the new connection type.
Do tradespeople cut the countertop opening?
Yes, if the cutout has not been made: the technician will cut it to the manufacturer’s template.
What is included in the connection price?
Labour, fixings, and leak testing. Flexible hose and sealant are charged separately if they are not included in the hob kit.
How is the leak test done?
Soapy water is put on all joints and checked for bubbles. This is the standard method.
Does a gas hob need a power socket?
If the hob has electric ignition, yes, a standard 230V socket near the countertop is needed.
How quickly can a tradesperson come?
That depends on who is free: you see the arrival time in the offer before you accept it. If it can’t wait, say so in the request. Post a request in the HandyMan24 app and agree the time with the tradesperson you choose.
