Filling holes and damage: what the job involves
Taking down shelves, curtain rails and a TV leaves plug holes, and a move leaves chips from furniture and cracks by the door frames. Filling holes and damage means packing the holes, sanding them flush with the wall and preparing the spot for paint so it disappears once painted.
The price is per square metre of repaired surface. With several holes in a room, the quote covers the whole wall or job.
What the repair covers
- pulling out old plugs and loose plaster;
- filling deeper holes in several layers;
- mesh over cracks that keep coming back;
- sanding flush with the wall;
- priming the spot for paint.
Why patches show after painting
Filler absorbs paint differently from the rest of the wall, so without primer a patch comes out duller or shinier. The other reason is texture: a smooth patch on a rough wall. That is why, after a repair, the wall is usually painted corner to corner, not just over the patch.
What to prepare
Shelves and hooks taken down, access to the walls, and whether the wall will be painted in full. Close-up photos of the damage help gauge the job. If you have leftover wall paint, keep it for the tradesperson.
Common questions
Can I fill and paint straight away?
No. The filler has to dry, usually a few hours to a day, then sanding and primer.
What about a crack that keeps returning?
It gets mesh or reinforcing tape. If it keeps widening, the cause is worth looking into.
Is this useful when moving out of a rented flat?
Yes, it is a common reason to book: plug holes and knocks before handing back the keys.
