Where it starts
Atlas is a Polish maker of building chemicals. Its range includes gypsum patching plasters, powder finishing compounds and ready-mixed pastes. This job needs both kinds.
Deep spots come first. Chases and back-box holes are filled with a separate gypsum plaster, in one or two passes, until they’re flush. A thin finishing coat alone would sink back into the groove.
Cracks get opened up: widened with a scraper, cleared of anything loose, primed. If the crack is live and moves, say where the wall meets the ceiling or above a door frame, mesh or tape goes into it. Otherwise it comes back no matter how neatly it’s filled.
Then primer over the whole wall and the finishing compound in thin coats. Last comes sanding under a side light.
This isn’t a one-day job. Each coat has to dry before the next goes on, so the tradesperson comes back a few times or works through several rooms in turn. If a bid promises patching, skimming and painting all at once, ask how they plan to get it dry.

Where it goes wrong
- Finishing compound straight into a chase. It sinks and shows the outline of the groove.
- Filling over a crack without opening it. A season later it’s back.
- No primer. The filler dries patchy and the paint takes unevenly.
- Painting too soon. Damp filler means blotches and peeling.

- Make sure the electrician is finished and the wiring is checked. Anything near sockets is done with the power off.
- Clear the walls, cover furniture and floors.
- Take close-up photos of the cracks and chases so the tradesperson can size the job.

Pay the tradesperson directly; they issue the invoice. Fillers, primer, mesh and sheeting usually count as materials, separate from labour, as do rubbish removal and carrying materials up. The tradesperson fixes their own flaws, but cracks from the building settling are not on them.
