Rehau makes the PVC profiles, the frame and the sash. The hinges, locking cams and the mechanism behind the handle usually come from a different manufacturer, picked by the company that built the window. Its name is often stamped on a hinge or on the metal strip along the edge of the sash. Worth a look before you book, because it tells the tradesperson which keys and parts to bring.
There are three places to adjust. The bottom hinge lifts the sash and moves it sideways. The top stay sets the upper corner. The eccentric cams around the sash control how hard it presses on the seal, which decides whether you feel a draught. A well set window closes with one turn of the handle and no pushing.
Sometimes adjustment is not the fix. A seal that has cracked and gone flat needs replacing. If the frame was bent during installation, or the foam around it has crumbled, the problem is in how the window was fitted, and a straight tradesperson will tell you that after a look.
What tends to go wrong
- Cams turned to maximum pressure all year. The seal flattens fast, the handle gets stiff, and a season later the draught is worse.
- Forcing the handle when the sash has dropped. The mechanism is working under load, and you can snap a part that costs more than the adjustment.
- Oiling with whatever is in the kitchen. Cooking oil collects dust and everything runs worse after winter. Use grease or oil made for window hardware.
- Turning screws blind without taking the hinge cover off. It is easy to knock the sash out so far that tilting stops working.
Before anyone comes round
- Count the windows and note what is wrong with each: draught, rubbing, sticking handle, tilt not working.
- Take a photo of the bottom hinge and the spot where the sash touches the frame.
- Clear plants and bits off the sills and pull the curtains aside.
