Ceiling cornice installation: what the job involves
Coving hides a wavy wall-to-ceiling line, cracks in the corner and a ragged paint edge. It can also conceal an LED strip for indirect lighting. Fitting coving means cutting polystyrene, polyurethane or plaster coving to length, gluing it up, filling the joints and getting it ready to paint.
The price is per running metre. The material and the number of corners affect the time.
How fitting works
- measuring the room perimeter;
- cutting the corner mitres in a mitre box;
- gluing the coving with adhesive;
- filling joints and gaps with decorator’s caulk;
- preparing it for paint.
Coving material
Polystyrene coving is light and cheap but dents easily. Polyurethane is harder, has crisper detail and takes paint better. Plaster looks the most traditional but is heavy and needs extra fixing. For LED lighting there are special profiles with a channel for the strip.
What to prepare
The coving with extra for offcuts, clear walls at ceiling level, and walls already painted or before their last coat. Give the room perimeter and coving type in the request. If LED is planned, say where the power is.
Common questions
Is coving painted before or after fitting?
Usually after, with the last coat on the wall or ceiling. That hides the joints.
Will coving hide an uneven ceiling?
Partly. Bigger gaps between coving and wall are filled with caulk.
Is LED fitting included?
Fitting the coving is. Connecting the LED strip and driver is a separate service.
