The table shows what tradespeople on the market charge for similar work. The final price comes in the fitter’s bid, based on photos of the opening. The door type changes it most: an interior door with an adjustable frame is a different job from a heavy front door anchored into masonry. The state of the opening matters too, since widening or straightening a wall is extra work.

Doors from brands such as Porta, DRE or Voster arrive boxed with the frame in pieces. An adjustable frame covers a certain range of wall thickness, so before buying, measure how thick the wall really is, including plaster and tiles.

The fitting itself goes much the same in every flat. The fitter assembles the frame, sets it in the opening, gets it plumb and level on wedges, and only then foams it. The leaf goes on once the foam has set, then the hinges are adjusted and the door is checked so it neither swings open nor closes by itself.

Front doors are a different job

Front doors are heavier, lock at several points and are fixed with anchors, not foam alone. Old doors in blocks often sit in a steel frame mortared into the wall, so taking them out is loud and dusty; warn the neighbours. Making good the plaster around the new frame is usually a separate line in the bid.

Door fitting mistakes

• Buying doors before measuring the opening. Too narrow means widening, too wide means packing it out.
• Fitting before the floor goes down. Then the door scrapes, or the gap underneath ends up too big.
• Getting the opening side wrong. Left-hand and right-hand confuse people even in the shop, so draw which way each door should swing.
• Too much expanding foam. As it swells it bows the frame, and the door stops closing.
• Painting the walls after fitting without masking the frame.

Getting the flat ready

• Measure the width, height and wall thickness at every opening.
• Finish the floors and main painting before the doors go in.
• Bring the doors into the flat a few days early so they adjust to the humidity.
• Decide whether the old doors need taking out and carting away.

Booking the fitting in the app

Foam and fixings are usually part of the labour. Handles, locks, architraves, taking old doors away and carrying a heavy front door upstairs are paid separately. Whoever hung the doors answers for them and will adjust his own fitting. Crooked walls and faults in the door leaf itself are not on him.
