1.7.1

How do I get my home ready for the professional’s visit?

In short Clear space around the work area, put away valuables and anything fragile, and sort out access and parking. Then the professional can get straight to work.

The main thing is clear access to where the work will be done. Moving a wardrobe or hunting for the basement key makes the visit longer, and with hourly work it also makes the bill bigger.

The day before

  • Move furniture away and take off anything that could fall. Empty the cabinet under the sink if the job involves the tap or the trap.
  • Put away documents, jewellery and small electronics.
  • Check where the main water valve and the fuse box are.
  • Put the materials you’ve bought in one place, together with receipts and instructions.

Before they arrive

  • Explain how to get in: the entry code, the floor, whether the lift works.
  • Say where it’s possible to park. In a paid parking zone, agree in advance who pays for parking.
  • Shut pets in another room.
  • Ask whether the professional brings sheeting and floor protection or whether you should have them ready.

If you won’t be at home

In the job you name the person who will meet the professional: a neighbour or a family member. Their first name and phone number are seen only by the chosen professional, and only until the contract ends. Tell that person what needs doing and where the materials are.
