How do I prepare for electrical work?

In short Find the fuse box and note which circuit controls what. Don't take anything apart yourself: work on an electrical installation is done by a qualified person.

A safety warning first: the current in a home installation can kill. Don’t open sockets or junction boxes yourself, and don’t assume the wires are dead just because the light doesn’t work. In Poland, work on an electrical installation is done by a person with the required qualifications (a certificate of qualification, świadectwo kwalifikacji). Check the exact requirements at the source, or ask the professional before you choose.

Before the visit

  • Find the fuse box and make sure it can be reached.
  • If the fuses aren’t labelled, check which one switches off which room and note it down.
  • Describe the symptoms in the job: what stopped working, what happened before, whether a fuse keeps tripping.
  • Have the lamps or sockets you’ve bought ready, with their instructions.
  • Move furniture away from the walls where the work will be done.

When not to wait

Smell burning, see sparks or a socket that’s overheating? Switch off the power at the main switch if you can do it safely, and don’t use that circuit. If there’s smoke or fire, call 112.

The professional’s profile shows qualifications we’ve checked in a public register. The badge only says that the entry exists. If the document you’re asking about isn’t there, ask the professional to show it.
