How do I prepare for plumbing work?

In short Find the main water valve and check that it turns. Empty the cabinets under the sink, and have towels and a bowl ready.

Mind the safety side. Water and electricity don’t mix: if there’s a leak near sockets or electrical appliances, don’t touch them with wet hands, and switch off that circuit. Work on a gas installation, for example a gas water heater in the bathroom, is done only by a person with the required qualifications.

Before the visit

  • Find the main water valve in your flat and check that it turns. An old valve that has seized up is better reported to the professional straight away than discovered in the middle of a leak.
  • Empty the cabinet under the sink or washbasin.
  • Have towels, a bowl and a bucket ready.
  • Take a photo of the pipe connections and valves and add it to the job.
  • Keep fittings you’ve bought, such as a tap or a trap, in the original packaging with the instructions.

When the riser has to be shut off

If the work means cutting off water to the whole stairwell, ask the building administration or manager in advance how this is handled in your building. It’s a good idea to warn the neighbours.

A leak right now

  1. Turn off the valve closest to the leak, or the main valve.
  2. Switch off the power if the water is near the electrical installation.
  3. Mop up the water and take photos.
  4. If water is getting into the flat below, tell the neighbours and the administration.
